Apiary

Apiary is the control plane behind Spotlight’s managed hosting: one console that watches and operates every client domain we look after, across all five of the companies that provide the underlying services. The application was built by Swarm Labs; Spotlight designed its identity and runs the platform. It isn’t a product for sale; it’s an internal tool dedicated to Spotlight Studios clients, and every hosting client feels its effect: faster turnarounds, safer changes and a full record of everything done.

Behind every managed hosting client sat five separate provider dashboards, and two ageing internal tools trying to hide that:

• Five dashboards for one job: a single website’s domain, hosting, security and email were spread across five different companies, with no single view of its health.
• Slow, risky routine work: everyday jobs meant logging into the right provider and hoping nothing slipped between them.
• Power needs guard rails: a console that can restart servers and transfer domains must never put a destructive change one careless click away.
• Keys under control: passwords and access keys for the providers had ended up wherever the old tools needed them, when they should be locked away in one place.
• A working tool, not a dashboard for show: the replacement had to be fast, dense and comfortable for engineers to live in all day.

Spotlight designed the console’s identity and runs the platform; Swarm Labs engineered the application around one uncompromising rule, a single route for every change:

• A dark operator identity: violet-black screens with a honey accent and a signature “sync sweep” that visibly scans the domain list; monitoring you can actually watch.
• One route for every change: whether it’s our engineer, a client using self-serve or an automation, every change goes through the same checks and lands in the same audit log. Nothing bypasses it.
• Safety gates by design: destructive operations are restricted to senior staff, the console prompts for a backup before risky changes, and every domain’s email security is checked continuously.
• Keys locked away: provider credentials are encrypted and never leave the platform; nothing sensitive is ever sent to the browser.
• Always watching: the platform checks every domain’s health around the clock and raises alerts before problems reach clients.

Apiary now fronts the day-to-day running of Spotlight’s managed hosting. Routine work (a domain record change, a cache refresh, a pre-update backup) happens from one screen instead of five dashboards, so it happens in minutes. Two old internal tools have been retired, clients can safely handle simple requests themselves, and every action lands in the audit log while continuous monitoring raises alerts before clients notice a problem.
