Scout

Scout identifies the companies behind anonymous website visits, works out what they were looking for from how they behave, and attaches an honest confidence score to every match: company-level only, never individuals, and respectful of privacy law throughout. It’s built for agencies and business-to-business teams who want to know who visited, what they wanted and what to do next, without inflated lead counts or black boxes.

Overview

Scout is Spotlight’s own visitor-intelligence tool: it names the companies visiting a website, shows what they were interested in and, unusually for its category, tells you how sure it is. The application was built by Swarm Labs; Spotlight’s work was everything around it: a distinctive editorial design and the infrastructure that runs it. Scout is available to Spotlight clients through the client portal.

Client Intro

Scout identifies the companies behind anonymous website visits, works out what they were looking for from how they behave, and attaches an honest confidence score to every match: company-level only, never individuals, and respectful of privacy law throughout. It’s built for agencies and business-to-business teams who want to know who visited, what they wanted and what to do next, without inflated lead counts or black boxes.

Challenges

A tool whose whole promise is honesty needed design to match:

  • Trust on show: the category is notorious for inflated lead counts, so Scout wears its confidence openly. Every match is scored HIGH, MED or LOW, with a plain-English “Because…” reason beside it.
  • Three signals, one answer: who a visitor is, how they behaved on the site and what they searched for each tell part of the story; Scout had to blend them into a single feed you can act on in seconds.
  • Noise filtered out: broadband providers and bots masquerade as companies, and had to be flagged automatically rather than sold on as leads.
  • Effortless install: set-up is one line pasted into a website, and it doesn’t slow the site down.
  • Simple to buy: Scout is ordered, upgraded and managed through the same client portal as any other Spotlight service.

Solution

Spotlight designed the identity and built Scout’s platform:

  • An editorial identity: warm paper and honey amber with elegant serif headlines, closer to a well-set newspaper than a dashboard, so the information reads calmly.
  • Confidence in the open: green HIGH, honey MED and grey LOW labels score every match, flags mark suspected broadband or bot traffic, and a rotating “Because…” line explains each call in plain English.
  • Always up to date: Scout checks its data sources around the clock, on a schedule matched to each plan, and sends high-interest visits to the right people by Slack and email.
  • Nothing for clients to maintain: Scout runs entirely on Cloudflare’s worldwide network. There are no servers to think about, and improvements reach every workspace the moment they’re ready.
  • Part of the portal: ordering, upgrades and billing all happen through the Spotlight client portal, so Scout works like any other service we provide.

Results

Scout now answers “who visited, and what should I do?” in seconds: companies arrive in one live feed with a score and a reason attached, false positives are flagged automatically, and what each company searched for is shown alongside. High-interest visits alert the right people in Slack and email, and matches sync both ways with HubSpot. Scout is available to Spotlight clients from £249 a month with a free 14-day trial.
