Colour Index

The Colour Index is the definitive classification of dyes and pigments: the Society of Dyers and Colourists’ authoritative registry, relied on by the world’s colour industries since 1924. For its third generation at v3.colour-index.com the application was built by Swarm Labs, and Spotlight’s brief was the design and the infrastructure: a near-monochrome interface where the colour itself is the hero, delivered quickly anywhere in the world.

A century-old scientific registry had outgrown its platform, and the rebuild came with demands most websites never face:

• An ageing platform: the previous edition ran on technology that couldn’t support the search, access and archive features a modern reference work needs.
• Search at reference-work scale: 27,412 colourants and 146,000 commercial products had to be searchable in under a second, whether you type an exact name or describe what you mean.
• A locked heritage: decades of print publications survived only as scanned pages, disconnected from the modern records they describe.
• Restraint as the design brief: for a global industrial and academic audience, the interface had to stay near-monochrome so that each colourant’s hue (the data itself) leads every page.

Swarm Labs rebuilt the application from the ground up; Spotlight designed the interface and assembled the platform it runs on:

• The colour is the hero: a paper-white design with elegant type and quiet chrome, so every swatch reads true.
• Fast anywhere in the world: the registry is delivered through Cloudflare’s worldwide network, so a researcher in Mumbai gets the same instant response as one in Manchester.
• Search that understands meaning: type an exact name or describe roughly what you’re after; both come back in under a second, across the whole registry.
• A heritage unlocked: decades of scanned print volumes were digitised, made readable and connected to the modern records they first defined, with every link checked by a person and the original page images kept alongside.
• A registry, not just a website: member sign-in, subscription tiers, a submission process for manufacturers, and controlled access for the industry software that needs the data directly.

Colour Index v3 now serves 27,412 colourant records, 146,000 commercial products and more than 840 manufacturers to users in 62 countries, with every search answered in under a second. The century-old dataset was carried over intact, and decades of heritage publications are now readable, searchable and linked to the records they first defined. A registry established in 1924, trusted by names such as Archroma, Huntsman Textile Effects, DyStar, Clariant and BASF and by institutions including Leeds, the RCA and NCSU, is now as fast and dependable as the industries that rely on it.
