The importance of UI and UX design and why it matters for your business

Nowadays, the challenge for business is to create, market and sustain a website in the ever0growing ocean of the world wide web. The importances should be not only regarding what the website has to offer, but also the way it delivers its content to complete user satisfaction.

Lets put ourselves in the user’s shoes:

  • Imagine a website that promises a lot but is hard to navigate through.
  • Or a website that offers a unique product or service but fails to showcase it.
  • Or take an application that has big business potential but is poorly designed.

Is the user going to stick around or start looking for alternative options?

In most cases, the user would start looking for other options, and that’s where the competitions on the web starts to get tricky.

What is UI - Importance of UI and UX design and why it matters for your business - Spotlight Studios

What is UI and UX?

Content, design and functionality of the websites are the most important key ares that continue to evolve today. One of the most important elements of a website is the user interface because it plays a massive role in the stickiness of website traffic.

UI (User Interface) is how a website interacts with the user: These are the features of the website that people use to get around understand how it works. This is excluding beaty or aesthetics. It’s mainly about usefulness and the way it delivers the content to its users.

UX (User Experience) is the art of improving the overall experience of the users when they interact with the website in order to achieve its goal and provide the required customer satisfaction. This keeps customers in mind and creates the structure of websites. The procedure focuses on wireframing the website and structuring all of its content and componends in an appropriate way in order to simplify the user’s experience.

A website should be:

  • Easy to use
  • Easy to understand
  • Error-free
  • Effective

The main goal of your website should be to get the user as easy and as quickly as possible to your product or service. Good UI makes this happen.

A good interface designs guides the users through their journey on the website. It could be a good chain of screens, pages, forms, buttons etc.

“When people visit your website they should feel welcomed. They should feel at home.”

Good vs Bad UI/UX - Importance of UI and UX design and why it matters for your business - Spotlight Studios

Good vs Bad UI/UX

There are sime similar traits of good and bad user interfaces that are mistakenly shared across various websites.

Good UI:

  • Intuitive – people have no issues navigating through the website
  • Familiar – even your first-time-visitors should know how to use the website
  • Leading – it should lead people through your website through good structure and to your end point – your product

Bad UI:

  • Sluggish and unresponsive – interacting is slow and clunky
  • Complicated – people have a hard time to understand the website
  • Confusing – users wont be able to navigate throug hteh website easily
  • Inconsistent design – inconsistent design which confuses visitors
  • No target – the target audience of the website is not clear
  • Lack of social interaction – nowadays social media plays a big part in online presence and people like seeing that
  • Readability issues – content is unreadable and hard to understand

5 Reasons why it's important - Importance of UI and UX design and why it matters for your business - Spotlight Studios

5 Reasons why it’s important

1. How you present your product matters the most

If the user interface is poorly designed  and complex it will drive infocming traffic away. This is one of the common reasons why so many businesses invest in finding a good UI designer. If your analytics are showing a higher bounce rate than your would like, bad UI / UX is a common cause.

2. Great design is great business

The branding, color scheme, layout, graphics, tab and button placement, typography usage and white space determine how well awebsite communicates visually with the visitor. There are three responses to a piece of design — yes, no, and WOW!

3. The best marketing tool is the right content

A stable UI ensures that your content will be presented in the right way and will appeal to the people that are searching for it. It should go without saying that effective communication is one of the most important points of the website.

4.You need an easy-to-use interface

The navigation of your website should be easy to locate and browse through. If it is complex for a user to use it, there will be no way they will stay on the website for long. Modern businessses invest in digital marketers and UI/UX designers in order to achieve the perfect navigation system for their target audience.

5. Form and functionality are everything!

Exceptional customer experience goes along with usability. If your website’s functionality is slow nad clunky, that will result in a loss of potential clients, especially on mobile devices.

5 ways it can help your business - Importance of UI and UX design and why it matters for your business - Spotlight Studios

5 ways it can help your business

1. Generates recommendations

If your UX design is good it will encourage word of mouth recommendations. Your website’s usefulness and ease of use will encourage people to tell others about it. A part of UX is making sharing easy and free recommendations from users are far more valuable than a paid advertisement.

2. Reduces development costs

Ensuring the development time is targetet on the areas that really matter can really keep a project within budget and lower development costs, including extensive user research, usability testing and prototyping.

3. Generates loyalty

You need to put the design team in the shoes of the user in order to achieve ultimate customer loyalty. Researching your target audience’s behaviour will simplify development work which will speed up the whole process, giving you more time to work on more important things – growing your business.

4. Reduces internal costs

It’s important to prioritise not what the developers and designers want, but what the users want to get out from the website. If this is followed throug hcorrectly it will result in less support requests. Ultimately, that will result in less spent time in solving issues with client interaction.

5. Increased profits

75% of the people judge a website on its design. People are more likely to buy a product from a well-designed website rather than an unappealing one. If the website is easy to use this will give you a combination which will boost up your user interactiong, therefore resulting in more products or services sold.

Testing, Testing - Importance of UI and UX design and why it matters for your business - Spotlight Studios

Testing, testing

The best way to ensure that your website has good UI is to test it. This doesn’t need to be difficult and you can do it while the website is live. One of the easiest ways of testing a website is to ask your customers for feedback. This will show that you respect their opinion and that they matter to you.

Good UI will make people feel comfortable and it should provide the necessary information they need in order to make their decision about your product. If you keep following the rules from this article you should be good to go with your UI and UX, but remember, there is laways room for error and there is always room for improvement.

2. Peace of mind

You should spend more time growing your business, not worrying about the state of your website. You need to roll back your site? No worries, Spotlight Studios’s managed WordPress hosting plans got you covered every step of the way.

Every minute, malicious bots are crawling millions of websites looking for vulnerabilities. They try brute force attacks on passwords, infiltratefor outdated themes, plugins, and core code.

“Who would want to break into my site?”, you might ask. These hackers seek to turn your website into a spam-sending and malware distributing machine.

What can Spotlight Studios do in this case?

Our managed WordPress hosting services include regular uptime checks which mean we will check the status of all websites we host every minute. That means 1440 checks for your sites every day. Our uptime checks allow us to react to issues, such as if your website is taking longer to load than usual or if there is a security flag before they affect lots of visitors.

We backup your sites at least once every day so if the worst happens we’ll be able to bring your website back almost instantly. We offer separate backups and backup history if needed. If you feel your website might break down because of unstable code, we can increase the backup frequency to every 6 hours or even every hour for an aditional fee. If you make frequent changes or have a very dynamic site, we advise on this feature.

Our infrastructure is built on the best platforms, which means your site can scale as much as you need. Sudden traffis surges from social media or being featured on television is no match for our server’s scalability. We are ready for that.

We keep all of our server software up to date and constantly monitor everything. Our experts have years of experience dealing with all sorts of website issues including WordPress issues and can restore your site to perfect working condition in matter of minutes.

Support That Cares Managed WordPress hosting Scalable Spotlight Image

3. Our servers are scalable

After working hard on your website’s content, there comes a time when you are finally rewarded for your work and you get featured on social media or even television. Thousands of visitors come to your site in a matter of minutes.

But this is exactly when most websites fail – just when your site is its most rewarding, the wave of visitors overwhelm the server and the site gets slow or goes down. New visitors will be shown a blank screen or an error.

Our managed services will ensure that you have enough server power to handle all of the user requests going to your website. You wont have to deal with dreaded error messages that stop your users from visiting.

Top 10 SME tools for business

While there is so much to choose from in the online and IT world we thought it would help if we narrowed down our top selections as to what we thought offered the most value, flexibility, scale and ability to implement.

Communications and Business Tools

1. Office 365

Your company is only as good as its employees’ ability to work together to accomplish tasks. The business premium license at just over £10 a month has seen an increase in the last year however they do now offer 50mb Mailbox full access to their business applications on 5 devices and 1TB of cloud storage with Onedrive. Share and work anywhere online at any time.

2. RingCentral

For many years, Voice over IP (VoIP) solutions were only built for large, national and international companies. But with tools such as RingCentral, you’ll be able to quickly and easily set up your VoIP tool and gain access to softphone, device applications and whereabouts and systems features such as call routing, faxing, and voicemail. While including more advanced features such as call recording, a unified communications application, and dial-in conferencing at the lowest price levels for calls, and you’re still able to take advantage of higher call quality and call centre features not typically associated with your local telco.

3. ClickMeeting Video Conferencing

If you’re looking for an easy-to-use video conferencing tool, then ClickMeeting is among the best on the market. It offers a free 30-day trial, low-price plan options, and cool collaboration tools such as shared desktops, whiteboarding tools, and in-app private chat. No, you won’t be able to integrate the tool with every social network and you won’t get access to operator-assisted meetings, but it’s got enough to guarantee that your calls are crisp and clear.

4. MailChimp Email Marketing

MailChimp is the most popular and most capable email marketing service regardless of your price level or technological grits. It offers a rich, free plan; lots of third-party integration (much of which is available at the lowest price levels), and it’s got many email templates that help you fire off emails at a rapid clip. You can even take advantage of a decent amount of email analytics to let you know whether or not your messages are falling flat.

5. Elastic Mail

If you require a bit more flexibility than MailChimp allows, then check out Elastic Mail. More of a hybrid of Mailgun and MailChimp with no limit to its marketing database and allows you to send up to 150k mail for free each month. It would be silly not to try it out.

6. Shopify E-Commerce

Yes, Shopify£19.99 at Shopify is the king of all e-commerce platforms. But “best” doesn’t always translate to “best for everyone.” In Shopify’s case, you should be considering this online shopping cart for your web-based storefront regardless of your company’s size. That’s because it requires very little technical expertise to set up, you can try it for free for 30 days, and it provides an abundance of free templates and tools that will make your online business easier to oversee.

7. Sprout Social

Sprout Social is one of the best social media analytics tools available regardless of your company’s size. However, for SMBs, you’ll love that Sprout Social offers a free 30-day trial, multiple price tiers, and a clean design that makes sorting and discovering data easy.

8. Hootsuite

If you’re more interested in managing your social campaigns than you are in measuring them, then try Hootsuite. This tool scales as you grow by letting you pay for extras (rather than bundling everything into one price package). Hootsuite offers the most comprehensive package of listening, publishing, and third-party integration options for businesses of all sizes.

9. Zoho CRM (and surveys, campaigns add-on’s also supported for great additions)

If you need to gauge how well your sales and product is doing with your clients or if you just want to know what people think of your new ad campaign, then you should look at Zoho CRM and Surveys. Also, Zoho Survey is optimal for SMBs. It has one of the simplest user interfaces (UIs) to manage, offers superb reporting, and is available for about $19 per month. You can also use the free option, which does have some limits.

10. Slack

Even if you’ve never used Slack, you’ve probably heard all about it. This chat-based communications tool is designed for teams of all sizes to communicate with one another throughout the workday. Slack lets users create chat rooms, private chats with small groups, and one-on-one private chats. You can use the tool to share files, have a laugh with animated GIFs, or connect to other tools via plug-and-play integrations, including Twitter and Zapier. We love it here, and my personal favourite tool in the house.

The Benefits of having live chat on your website Spotlight Studios Ltd

The benefits of having live chat on your website

Live chat is the informal sales assistant of the digital world – there to help boost customer confidence by answering quick questions about products and services without submitting a formal email request.

How effective is it?

This research study – “Making Proactive Chat Work” was conducted by Forrester Research and it found the following:

“Many online consumers want help from a live person while they are shopping online; in fact, 44% of online consumers say that having questions answered by a live person while in the middle of an online purchase is one of the most important features a Web site can offer.”

There was also an e-marketer.com survey that showed that 63% of customers were more likely to return to a website that offers live chat. The survey goes on to say:

“62% reported being more likely to purchase from the site again. A further 38% of respondents said they had made their purchase due to the chat session itself. All these attitudes were even more prevalent among respondents who bought online at least weekly.”

This convenience creates a more inviting shopping experience and has a direct impact on customer satisfaction giving you an edge over your competition and driving sales up. Customers are much more likely to return to websites where they know that they are going to receive the support they need with minimal effort.

What is it, really?

Ultimately, live chat is a real-time messaging system – between you and your customers, your team and your customers or a third party and your customers depending on what level of support you need. They range from free services (with a small setup and installation charge) to subscription-based services depending on your needs and budget. The chat window can be fully branded for an additional cost or might have some branding for the provider – we are very open with our supplier partnerships and you’ll notice that we leave the branding on our live chat windows.

GDPR Enforced 25 May 2018 Spotlight Studios

GDPR Enforced 25 May 2018

The GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) will be enforced from 25 May 2018. UK organisations that process the personal data of EU residents have only a short time to ensure that they are compliant. The regulation is designed to harmonise data protection law across Europe and make the law more relevant to our digital age.

How does Brexit Affect Us

In short, it doesn’t. Forget about Brexit, we don’t get a “get out of jail free” card. The GDPR does not just apply to businesses in the EU, it applies to any organisation that controls or processes EU data, wherever they are in the world. Our government has already announced that it wants the UK to be “the safest place in the world to go online”. Here’s an overview of some of your new responsibilities:

  • Keep a record of data operations and activities
  • Carry out a data privacy impact assessment (PIA) for systems and projects
  • Consider if you will be required to designate a data protection officer (DPO)
  • Notify the supervisory authority of a data breach
  • Review data processing processes
  • Implement “privacy by design” and “privacy by default”

How can Spotlight Studios help

We have a wide-range of data protection expertise to help you prepare. We can offer consultancy and resources to help you understand these new regulations. Get in touch today to find out more
